People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

Review by Jillian Gilbert

Director of Operations

People We Meet on Vacation is a charming, light-hearted fiction novel. When reading fiction, I’m often drawn to crime novels rather than romance; however, this one piqued my interest, and I’m so glad it did. This is easily one of the best books I’ve read in the last year. It leaves you feeling better than when you first picked it up, and it will certainly have you planning your next vacation before you finish it.

Favorite Quote: “It hurts to want it all, so many things that can’t coexist within the same life.”

Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved by Kate Bowler

Review by Jillian Gilbert

Director of Operations

I was recently introduced to Kate Bowler through a podcast called OnBeing. Together, Kate and journalist Wajahat Ali discussed the future of hope amidst loss, uncertainty, and grief. I was instantly engrossed by her story and ordered her book Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved the same day.

This is one of the best memoirs I’ve read. Kate is naturally witty and captivating, but she’s also real and raw. I finished this book feeling so grateful for this life-both the wonderful, immeasurable joy-filled parts and the inexplicable, heartbreaking parts.

Favorite Quote: “I can’t reconcile the way that the world is jolted by events that are wonderful and terrible, the gorgeous and the tragic. Except that I am beginning to believe that these opposites do not cancel each other out. I see a middle-aged woman in the waiting room of the cancer clinic, her arms wrapped around the frail frame of her son. She squeezes him tightly, oblivious to the way he looks down at her sheepishly. He laughs after a minute, a hostage to her impervious love. Joy persists somehow and I soak it in. The horror of cancer has made everything seem like it is painted in bright colors. I think the same thoughts again and again. Life is so beautiful. Life is so hard.”

Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality by Henry Cloud

Review Jasmine Cormier

Communications and Marketing Manager

Integrity is more than what we were taught, “Do the right thing when no one is looking.” In Henry Cloud’s book, he discusses his experience training Fortune 500 companies’ leaders on how the issues we encounter, at times, are problems we caused due to a lack of integrity. What made me buy this book was the recommendation from pastor and friend Sarah Jakes Roberts.  I knew I would enjoy the author’s ability to induce thought-provoking introspection.

Favorite Quote: “When a person travels through a few years with an organization, or with a partnership, or any other kind of working association, he leaves a ‘wake’ behind in these two areas, task and relationship: what did he accomplish and how did he deal with people?”

This book challenged me outside of the workplace too.  I want to always leave things, and people for that matter, better than when I found them. I try not to focus on other shortcomings; however, I am a strong advocate for self-improvement and look for opportunities to do so within my daily life.
